Sprout a small garden right in your kitchen
Have you ever sprouted new vegetables and fruit from food scraps? This is a really easy way to get your food forest started. Just add water.
Water gives life to everything, even vegetable waste, so instead of throwing scraps away, give plants a chance to feed you again!
Take these simple steps and see how easy it is to grow food.
Add water to a shallow cup or bowl.
Put your food scraps in just enough to cover their bottoms. Start with cloves of garlic, leeks, and cabbage.
Within a few days you’ll see roots. Most plants can stay in water for a few weeks, but be sure to change the water every few days.
Plant indoors until you can transfer outdoors.
This is a great STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) project for kids. Watching plants grow is an awesome way to stimulate the mind, observe what happens over time, and ask questions. Get them engaged in growing food.
Many edible plants can be grown indoors with enough light, so don’t let the winter get you down. Get sprouting!
